BEFORE LOADING
1. Copy your COMMAND.COM onto the HALSCRIB system disk.
2. Use DISKCOPY to make a backup copy of the HALSCRIB
system disk.
LOADING
1. Insert the HALSCRIB system disk onto the default drive,
type HALSCRIB (or MONOCRIB or HGC_CRIB), then press the
[ENTER] key.
It is important that the files "HALSCRIB.EXE" and
"HAL 1987.DAT" both be on the same diskette. (The
accumulated statistics and your settings will always be
retrieved from the default drive).
PLAYING
The important keys are
[UP ARROW] for candidate card selection and setting selection
[LEFT/RIGHT ARROW] for card selection and changing options
[ENTER] for card confirmation and screen mode changes
When in doubt press any [ARROW] key a number of times, if that
has no effect, press the [ENTER] key.
AFTER LOADING
You should see the "LOGO" screen just after HALSCRIB has been
loaded.
1. Press any key. You should see the "SETTINGS" screen
after about 1 second.
2. To start play using the settings that are displayed,
press the [ENTER] key whenever the "ACTION" setting
option is "play".
3. To choose a different setting, press the [UP ARROW] or
[DOWN ARROW] key enough times so that the current
option of the setting you want is "highlighted".
4. To choose a different option of a particular setting,
press the [LEFT ARROW] or [RIGHT ARROW] enough times so
that the current option you want is "highlighted" (see
number 3).
5. After all options have been set, highlight the "play"
option of the "action" setting by pressing the [ARROW]
keys if required. You are ready to perform step 2.

DURING PLAY - CRIB DISCARDS ("cards" - "auto" mode)
The program will deal 6 cards alternately to you and to "HAL",
your computer opponent. After HAL decides on his 2 discards,
your left-most card will be "highlighted".
To select your 2 discards, you make 2 candidate discards first.
You can change your mind and reselect your discards or proceed.
1. To select your first discard, press the [LEFT/RIGHT
ARROW] key enough times so that the card you want
discarded is highlighted. Then press the [UP ARROW]
key. (This "reverse-highlighted" card can not be de-
selected until the second discard has been "reverse-
highlighted").
2. Select your second discard in exactly the same way as
in step 1.
3. The "reverse-highlighted" cards are candidates for the
crib. Press the [ENTER] key to commit them to the
crib. Press any other key to restart the selection
process (at step 1).
On the far left of the screen either above or below the crib
board you should note the positions of a "SCORE" box and directly
opposite a "single" card with a solid line on its left edge. The
"single" card represents the balance of the deck and its location
shows who the dealer is. (The crib belongs to the dealer.) The
"SCORE" box represents who the non-dealer is. (The non-dealer
plays the first card after the up-card has been selected).
HALSCRIB Copyright 1987 Hal Mueller Page 3 of 9
DURING PLAY - PEGGING
The up-card is randomly selected by the program and is displayed
between the dealer's hand and the dealer's crib. After this, the
non-dealer plays a card. This card is displayed to the left of
the "SCORE" box.
Whenever it is your turn to play, the leftmost card remaining in
your hand will be highlighted. To select a card, you follow a
process similar to discarding.
1. Press the [RIGHT/LEFT ARROW] keys enough times so that
the card you want to play is highlighted.
2. Press the [UP ARROW] key to make this card the
"reverse-highlighted" candidate card.
3. Press the [ENTER] key to commit the candidate card as
the played card. Press any other key to restart the
selection process (at step 1).
The program will play a card for you automatically in "no choice"
pegging situations. (A "no choice" situation exists if you have
only one card that can be legally played, if the remaining
playable cards are all the same rank, or if HAL has no more
cards left). The program will not let you play an illegal card.
(A card is illegal if it makes the pegging sum greater than 31).
DUURING PLAY - SCORING
In "score" - "yes" mode, the program automatically awards points
during pegging, hand valuation, and crib valuation for you and
HAL.
